Some roadside attractions are quick stops, but Mystery Hill isn’t one of them.
Visitors are often drawn in by the famous Natural Gravitational Anomaly, where water appears to run uphill and people lean at impossible angles. But the intrigue and laughs don’t stop there. With more than ten attractions across the property, Mystery Hill offers a full lineup of experiences that can easily turn a short visit into a full day of discovery!
That’s the beauty of Mystery Hill – you don’t just stop by… You explore, experiment and uncover something new as the day unfolds.
Here are five ways to build a full day of adventure at Mystery Hill.
#1 Start with the Mystery
Every visit should begin where the impossible happens.
Inside North Carolina’s only Natural Gravitational Anomaly, your sense of balance is immediately put to the test. Water appears to run uphill, people lean at strange angles and suddenly everyone is laughing while trying to figure out what’s actually going on!
The experience doesn’t stop there. Continue your journey through the strange and surprising inside the Hall of Mystery, where hands-on activities and optical illusions challenge your understanding of gravity, perception and physics.
It’s part science, part illusion and entirely memorable. This experience sets the tone for the rest of the day!
What guests are saying: “Had some crazy fun trying to figure ourselves out and keep our equilibrium in place.”
#2 Step Back in Time
After the mystery, slow things down with a look at the region’s past.
The historic 1903 Dougherty House offers a glimpse into early Appalachian life and the family that helped shape the area’s history. Walking through the home feels like stepping into another era, with preserved furniture, artifacts and stories that reflect daily life from generations ago.
Nearby, the Moon Mullins Native American Artifact Museum invites visitors to explore one of the largest private collections of Native American artifacts in the world. Representing artifacts from more than 20 states and totaling over a quarter million pieces, the museum offers an opportunity to connect with the traditions, craftsmanship and history of Indigenous cultures.
It’s a quieter part of the experience, but one that adds meaningful depth to the day.

#3 Strike Gold
Participate in one of the region’s most beloved pastimes at Prospector Hill Gem Mining.
At the sluice, visitors sift through running water as colorful stones and minerals begin to appear in their tray. Before long, the excitement builds as each new discovery emerges!
You might uncover quartz, amethyst, tourmaline, fluorite, jade, arrowheads and other fascinating finds. Before long, everyone is comparing treasures and deciding which gem might be their favorite. It’s a simple, relaxing activity that adds a fun sense of discovery to the day.
What guests are saying: “We did the gem mining and really enjoyed looking at all the cool crystals and semi-precious gems.”
#4 Test your Aim
Feeling adventurous? Head over to Tomahawk Hill! Here, visitors can test their accuracy and skill by throwing traditional frontier tomahawks or throwing knives at wooden targets. For younger guests, foam and Velcro axes allow everyone to safely join the fun.
With a little guidance, first-timers quickly discover that hitting the target is trickier than it looks – but that’s part of the challenge. Friends cheer each other on, someone finally sticks the perfect throw and suddenly everyone wants another turn. Moments like this are what turn a visit into a story you’ll tell later.
What guests are saying: “Axe throwing was amazing. I was intimidated by it going in, but they explained the safety and how it work, and by a few tosses, I got it to stick and even managed a bulls eye!”
#5 Capture the Day
Before wrapping up your visit, stop by Professor Finnegan’s Old Time Photos for one last memorable experience.
Step into a different era by dressing in vintage-style costumes and posing with themed props for a classic portrait. Whether you channel a gunslinger, a saloon guest or a frontier adventurer, the result is equal parts laughter and nostalgia. The finished photo becomes a one-of-a-kind keepsake – and proof that you were part of the fun!
What guests are saying: “Becky was amazing at helping our group pick out outfits, took great pics in all our combinations and was so good with the kids.”
The best days at Mystery Hill rarely feel rushed – they unfold naturally, with one activity leading to the next, plenty of laughter, surprises and moments of curiosity along the way. What might begin as a quick stop often turns into hours of exploring, learning and discovering something unexpected.
Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning with friends and family, Mystery Hill has a way of turning curiosity into lasting memories – and that’s exactly the kind of adventure worth making time for!
