Summer Road Trip Adventure

Mystery Hill Itinerary – Summer Road Trip Adventure

Summer in North Carolina’s High Country begs for windows down, playlists up and a little detour into the unexpected — and at the heart of your journey, Mystery Hill is the destination that brings it all together.

With a mix of outdoor adventure, indoor exploration and hands-on fun, Mystery Hill serves as the anchor for your getaway. Surrounding experiences in Boone and Blowing Rock help round out your visit, giving you even more ways to soak in the sun from the long summer days.

Day One

Your summer road trip begins with the journey itself!

As you make your way into the High Country, take the scenic route whenever possible. Roll the windows down, breathe in the mountain air and don’t be afraid to chase a viewpoint or two (your camera roll will thank you!).

Along the way, keep an eye out for classic roadside stops that give your drive a little personality. Places like Maw’s Produce and J&M Produce are known for local honey, baked goods and handcrafted trinkets that are perfect for stocking up before the adventure continues.

And if you’re ready for your first big “wow” moment, a stop at The Blowing Rock delivers sweeping views of the Johns River Gorge and surrounding mountains, one of the area’s most iconic scenic overlooks and a longtime roadside attraction in its own right.

Once you arrive in town, don’t waste a second! Head straight to Mystery Hill to kick off your adventure.

Start with the gravitational anomaly and Hall of Mystery, the perfect way to shake off the drive and step fully into vacation mode. Once you’re properly mystified, take some time to explore both indoor and outdoor experiences. Step into Bubblerama to see what it’s like to stand inside a giant bubble, visit the Mullins Native American Artifacts Museum and the historic Dougherty House for a deeper look at the region’s history, and don’t miss Professor Finnegan’s Old Time Photos for a fun, take-home souvenir. Be sure to check out the arcade for a new, high-energy addition to the experience before leaning into the season and heading outside.

Follow the sound of the water to the River Walk, where the New River winds through the property, offering a refreshing spot to cool off, splash around, and enjoy the natural setting. Continue the fun at Tomahawk Hill to test your aim with axe throwing, or saddle up on the Bull Ride Challenge and see if you have what it takes to be a rodeo pro.

Before calling it a day, stop by Front Porch Eats for milkshakes, popcorn, and other classic summer treats.

After your time at Mystery Hill, check into your accommodations in Boone or Blowing Rock. Summer is the perfect time to embrace outdoor-friendly stays, whether that’s stargazing and grilling up some hamburgers at a cabin with mountain views, making a leisurely splash with your kayak at a riverside rental, or roasting some marshmallows at a nearby campground.

For dinner, head into Blowing Rock and grab a table inside or on the outdoor patio at The Speckled Trout & Bottle Shop, where Appalachian food and drink are celebrated in every bite. Enjoy seasonal dishes like Chilled Summer Squash and Dill Soup, Brown Sugar Glazed Pork Bites, and Roasted Fennel Potatoes to encapsulate the flavor of the season. Afterward, wander through town, seek out some live music (don’t miss The Speckled Trout’s “Tunes at the Trout!”), and enjoy the easy rhythm of a summer evening.

Day Two

After a full first day, ease into your morning with breakfast in Boone. Kick it old-school at Troy’s 105 Diner for a classic, hearty start, or stop by Hatchet Coffee for a lighter option before heading back out.

Today is all about exploring more of the High Country and soaking up the summer atmosphere. Spend the afternoon exploring Boone. Wander King Street, where the historic Original Mast General Store offers everything from old-fashioned candy to outdoor gear.

If you’re in the mood to stay outside, take a shaded walk along the Boone Greenway Trail, or head just outside town to Valle Crucis Community Park, where you can stretch out by the Watauga River, toss a frisbee or relax by the water.

Looking to keep the summer energy going? Consider adding a quick outdoor detour to Julian Price Memorial Park, where miles of trails and lake views offer a peaceful contrast to the day’s earlier activity.

If your visit lines up with local events, this is the perfect time to lean into the area’s summer scene. From Fourth of July celebrations and community festivals to performances as part of Appalachian State University’s Appalachian Summer Festival, there’s often something happening that brings the town to life after a day of exploring.

For dinner, try something different with Vidalia, known for its upscale Southern-inspired menu and setting, or opt for a more casual evening at Boone Saloon, a longtime local favorite with a lively feel (and an arcade if you want to challenge your loved ones to a rematch from earlier!).

Day Three

On your final morning, keep things flexible and go with the flow.

Start with breakfast at Melanie’s Food Fantasy, one of Boone’s favorite breakfast spots! Take in the bright, light ambience while sipping on a seasonal lemonade or diving into a stack of delicious French toast and fluffy pancakes. If you’re itching to keep exploring, grab something quick and easy before heading out for one last experience.

Take advantage of the summer season with a scenic drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, where sweeping views make it hard not to pull over “just one more time.” If you’re up for it, stretch your legs at a nearby overlook and soak in the fresh mountain air before hitting the road.

Not quite ready to leave? One last stop at Mystery Hill is always a good idea. Revisit a favorite attraction, grab that photo you meant to take, or squeeze in one more experience!

Before hitting the road, pick up snacks or enjoy one last meal in town, then begin your journey home with a new set of memories from the High Country.

At the center of it all, Mystery Hill transforms a simple summer road trip into a place where curiosity leads the way, laughter comes easily and every visit reveals something new.
